IVF ET (In Vitro Fertilization and Embryo Transfer), commonly known as IVF, is among the most commonly used assisted reproduction techniques. IVF in a spontaneous cycle is characterized by the absence of hormone stimulation, with retrieval of the egg from the woman, followed by in vitro fertilization of the embryo and subsequent transfer to the uterus.

This technique is suitable in the case of any contraindications regarding the use of hormones and in the case of poor ovarian response. Its success depends on the causes of the infertility, the age of the patient and the partner's seminal fluid values.

IN DETAIL

1 EGG RETRIEVAL (PICK-UP)
The eggs are gathered by means of a small operation performed under sedation, which is entirely pain free. The patient is released in just a few hours.

2 PREPARATION OF THE SPERM
The sperm that are most mobile and with the greatest chances of fertilizing the egg are selected.

3 IN VITRO INSEMINATION
The eggs are placed in a culture with the sperm of the partner, which will have been thawed and prepared to obtain fertilization. After around 20 hours, we check on the development of the zygotes (pre-embryonic phase). The zygotes for transfer to the uterus are left in a culture for a further 24-48 hours and become actual embryos. The average fertilization rate is about 70%.

4 EMBRYO TRANSFER
The fertilized embryos are quickly and painlessly transferred to the uterine cavity by means of a fine catheter. The operation lasts just a few minutes.

HOW
A trial transfer is performed on the woman the month before the egg retrieval. This trial is accompanied by the semen analysis of the partner, with bacteriology and sperm DNA fragmentation tests, to gain a clear and well-defined idea of the situation before the beginning of the treatment itself. If the tests are not performed at ProCrea, by the fifth day of the cycle, an ultrasound scan must be performed, notifying us of the results. Then the egg retrieval is performed, with subsequent fertilization with the sperm and lastly the transfer of the embryos to the uterus.

WHEN
The treatment is made up of three phases: preparation with the necessary tests regarding the patient and her partner, followed by the egg retrieval; the actual in vitro insemination with the partner's sperm, with checking of the development of the zygotes after around around 20 hours, leaving the zygotes for transfer in a culture for a further 24-48 hours; the embryo transfer, performed in just a few minutes by means of a fine catheter to the uterine cavity, quickly and painlessly. It is advisable to avoid overexertion for the following 3-4 days.

COSTS
IVF costs vary according to the number of cycles necessary. The first cycle with the partner's sperm costs EUR 5.600, whereas with donor sperm it costs EUR 5.900. Costs decrease as the treatment cycles progress. For all details on the treatment and everything included in the costs, we suggest you visit the Fees section.
